Unearthing Exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery

In this exhibition, ten modern and contemporary artists engage in processes of unearthing to explore complex histories, geographies, and memories. To unearth is to reveal what has been buried. It evokes the tangible and the organic; the forgotten and the remembered. Unearthing surfaces the past to shed new light on the present.

I went to a really remarkable exhibition towards the end of the summer holidays and was so interested to read about the themes of

"A personal memory bank of images"

What I really like about this work is that the scale is large and striking - and yet made up of these smaller unassuming blocks. I don't envisage what I paint to me quite as abstract (ie I am drawn to recognisable forms too) but I can see how my work would fit well with this concept, particularly as I'm looking at fragments.

I've been looking at how paper can be moulded or manipulated to create a narrative and so was intrigued by this work, particularly as it features the Cornish landscape - somewhere that is an important place to me personally, but also in my research paper.

It made me think of ways I can present the ideas I'm looking at. It's the first time I've really had a strong vision for some kind of final outcome - something that would be viewed by other people. A daunting prospect!
