Tutorial 30.1.2023

In my second tutorial Jonathan and I discussed my study statement and ideas in more detail.

As I've been thinking and planning over the last term, I have bene concerned I was casting a net too wide or changing lines too much. I still don't know if this will help or hinder, but I've come to the conclusion that because the area I'm looking at is process and discovery - it's almost apt that at this point I don't really know the fully refined direction.

Some of the notes I made are below:

Jonathan raised the interesting image of a triangle when discussing the threefold direction of ideas, process and outcome. Which comes first? I had in mind that ideas would be first but Jonathan made me consider whether that could also be process -which I hadn't really given much thought! I will keep this image of a triangle in my head.

Jonathan also mentioned a word, 'accretion' in connection with William Kentridge, who is a central artist to my enquiry. Accretion can be defined as 'growth or increase by the gradual accumulation of additional layers or matter' - and within the context of Kentridge's work, and the work I'm trying to produce - the layering of materials, weaving in and out and finding meaning and resolution. I love this word and am planning on writing it on a piece of large paper and sticking it to the wall as I work!
