Royal Drawing School Creative Conversations

Yesterday evening I watched a live event run by the Royal Drawing School, where Andrea Biasca-Caroni and Thomas Marks were discussing the life and work of Luigi Pericle.

I wasn't aware of Pericle's work but was intrigued to join as he was a prolific drawer and used some techniques I've been working on myself.

I was interested to learn he made thousands of drawings over his lifetime, mostly works on paper and using various layering techniques, scratching and on unusual surfaces. This is something I'm doing myself so I want to take a closer look at his work over the coming weeks. Some of the work we were shown reminded me of William Kentridge's ink sketches. It's interesting to find these connections.

Some phrases I made some quick notes of:

'New ways of mark making- but also considered'

'Calligraphy a source of inspiration- and Japanese ink painting'

'A mark that might carry a meaning'

'His drawings are not studies or sketches and not even visual notes, but final works that are independent of painting activity'

'Black line extending to the end of the sheet that might indicate they carry on to depict something more'

Thin lines - wide strokes

Allowing shades of grey to appear

Creating moments if light

Surfaces and depths - almost a metaphorical approach to drawing.

I wanted to make a record of these phrases that jumped out and see if I can use each one as a start for some experiments.
